I first discovered Motivation by Music (MbM) in the summer of 2019. I had always loved the idea of joining a choir but was convinced that no-one would want to hear me sing. At school I was the one teachers moved to the back row! Our choir leader, Emily Bollon, made me feel that every voice was welcome and can be improved, so I went along to my first rehearsal with a lot of apprehension and a tiny bit of hope.
That tentative step outside my comfort zone has led to a tremendous amount of fun, new friendships and opportunities to be part of events like ChoirBLAST and other performances at theatres, churches, pubs and care homes. Emily arranges all the songs and has written a lot of them too. Her encouragement, energy and enthusiasm are infectious. I have gained confidence in my voice and I have improved, but more importantly I have met and sung with many lovely people.
I have sung at three ChoirBLAST events and it has been so good to hear other choirs sing. The support for every choir, no matter their style or expertise is wonderful and one of the best moments for me was when the members of a very accomplished choir danced to our singing. That was very special.
I hope anyone attending ChoirBLAST who already knows how good it feels to sing with others will identify with my words, and for anyone reading this who is tempted to join a choir- I really encourage you to give it a go. MbM is open to new members and the first taster session is free. You don’t need to be able to read music and audition. We sing on Wednesday evenings in Guildford or you can join us via Zoom.
